There is that glorious moment of enlightenment when you realize what this person really is or what they have done to you, or the depths of what you have sacrificed for this unworthy person.  When the cords are cut there is that wonderful feeling of release and freedom.  For a friend, it is like regaining a long lost friend to see them return to you.  For a parent, it is like an answered prayer. For the person who is suddenly free, it feels like a religious experience.

Sadly, there are so many times when everyone around us can see the truth of a toxic, descending, dead-end, user, taker, dead-weight, anchor, degrading, polluting, destroying, controlling relationship except the person inside of it.  It seems that no matter how many people tell us that it is not worthy of us, there is something inside of us (our own pride) that keeps us from agreeing and fleeing.  We feel we have to prove a point.  The point that we were not wrong when we got involved in the first place against everyone’s warnings.

Honesty is the starting point of freedom.  Can I be absolutely honest with myself about this relationship and this person.  For instance…

• Am I a better person now that I have been with them?
• Am I better off than I was before?
• Am I healthier than I was before them?
• Do I feel better about myself now?
• Do the people in my life who truly care about me, parents, siblings, old friends, think I am better off?
• Would God be happy with my choice? (If you are a religious person, or even if not, still a good question)
• Does this person truly have MY best interests in mind?
• Does this person have a history of choosing their wishes over mine?
• Does this person use anything to control me? e.g. emotions, past decisions, my hopes for them to change, alcohol, drugs, children, threats, suicide, etc.
• Have healthy people around me been offering me a way out?
• Am I a strong enough person to go on without this person in my life?  (the answer is always yes)
• What will my life look like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my finances look like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my health look like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my family look like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my children be like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my home and possessions be like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• What will my body look like in 5 years if I do not make any changes?
• How much time have I wasted here already?
  

Humility is the second step.  After being honest and asking ourselves these hard questions, then we have to be humble enough to not only realize we have made a mistake, but to admit it to someone.  It takes humility because the person we will probably admit it to is probably one of the people who warned us about it in the first place.  Humble pie may not seem appealing, but it very nourishing.  I have found in my own life that the first bite is hard to swallow, but after that, it becomes very good.  And the benefits are amazing.  Help seems to come from everywhere.  Hope begins to spring to life again.  Freedom is straight ahead.

I know that these songs may surprise you when I say they really inspire me.  However, for some reason, when I feel far away and I need something to help me get back on track, these songs have truly helped me.  They are from the movie, The Apostle, with Robert Duvall.  He plays the part of an evangelistic pastor who is a very passionate man.  He has allowed his anger to push him into making a tragic mistake.  Yet, his true self still comes out.  Not all the music on this CD is used in the movie, however, when I bought the CD, I really loved these songs.

More than once, the Lord has used them to help me re-focus my thoughts and my spirit.  Sometimes I even listen to them on my way to church to help me focus my mind and get charged up.  They are not familiar songs or songs you would hear at church.  But I urge you to listen to them.  Perhaps after you listen to them a couple of times you will understand why they have this effect on me.  Although, I know that everyone is different and God speaks to us in different ways.  What touches my heart may not be the same for you.  Sometimes it is about the place you are at with God when the song first touches you.

It is nice to know that God can still use someone who makes mistakes.  God can even use someone who is a failure.  That is how I often feel.  That is the tool the enemy tends to use on me most often.  However, in spite of how I feel, these songs help me to keep in mind that God’s calling is still real and valid.  God’s purpose is more important than how I feel.  If God used a failure, like Peter, or Samson, maybe he can even still use me for something.
